What is up? Yeah. That was a fun. We we got some things we’ll talk about this evening, of course. Uh, episode 375, kind of a milestone. You know, it’s one of those.

It is hard to do. You know, not a whole lot of podcasts out there that have 375 episodes. Um, there are there’s some good ones. Don’t get me wrong. We do it every week.

I mean, there’s what was it? Was it the 90th Masters? Yes. Masters hasn’t even been around for 100 Masters. We’ve been around for 375 Chase of Daylight podcasts.

We’re older than the United States. We’re only getting ready to celebrate 275. I mean, we got them by 100. Got this USA by 100. Uh, so yeah, we’ll we’ll talk about the Vegas Golf Network tournament that took place over the weekend in Perump. Uh, we also can talk about mine and Dan’s round out at Paiute. I had quite a character in our group. Yes, we did. Yes, we did. Yeah. So uh the big news, I think.

Of course, everybody’s gonna be talking about live. We almost had to have an emergency podcast, but with waiting to see what happened, the dust settled, and there was no freckus. Uh, so we didn’t really need to go into that. Yeah, it’s just a matter of time. Uh, but according to Google Gemini, the top five news stories in the last 48 hours. Uh, Matt Fitzpatrick has outlasted Scotty Shevler to win the RBC. Uh, live golf and the Piff. That’s a whole big story. I don’t know how that’s not number one, but hey, it came in at number two. Uh, the Chevron Championship upped the purse by a million dollars. It is now a $9 million purse for the ladies this weekend. Um, and they are at a new home in Houston for the Chevron Championship. And uh the collegiate golf is heating up. Those those are the top five. It’s kind of a weak, kind of a weak time right now in the golf space. Not a whole lot going on. We’re between majors. Um, a lot of guys not wanting to play golf because they’re you know major prepping and exhaustion from majors. So we got the team event this weekend that really gets no publicity or play. Everybody kind of just passes it off as a bye week. Um, but the big news for me was the PGA tour saying Aloha

to Hawaii. Um, you know, see you later. We’re not coming back. Which I mean, I I get what’s going on in Kapalua, you know, with all the water and everything. But the Sony’s been around for a long time. And uh, yeah, I know, yeah.

Hawaii stops is crazy.

Yeah. Um, you know, they were chatting with a couple of the players. I was watching golf channel today, and they were chatting with some of the players that were like, dude, it’s great. You know, you get the invite, you go to Hawaii, um, you have to vacation with your family. It’s the great way to start the season. Big wide fairways, low scores. Uh, you know, then you can play the Sony, and and it’s a great way to start the season. So gonna be interesting.

I mean, the Kapalua is like one of the first tournaments that ever got me hooked on watching golf when Xander came back. That you know, that’s why I was always in it’s I mean, Bill Corps, Ben Crenshaw, you know, I mean, it’s it’s a staple. It’s like, you know, because it’s it was right after when there was no golf on TV besides like PNC and you know, just random things, and then it was like a golf is back and it’s coming back, and it’s the masters is around the corner, and everything is coming back, but yeah, that’s it’s it sucks because that was like the first one I really watched, and it really got me hooked in watching golf, so it’s it’s kind of a bummer bummer.

All I want to do when we went to Hawaii’s first time was go play Kapalua. I just I mean, right, yeah. I just I wanted because I’ve seen it on TV, it’s so damn cool. Yeah, so like I said, this new schedule. We’re definitely, you know, I think they’re gonna push it to post Super Bowl, and the first event will be you know the weekend after the Super Bowl, and just not even have to deal with any of that leading up to it. Yeah, but we’ll see if see if that comes to fruition, but it also opens the door.

I I wonder if it has anything to do with the TGL because that’s TGL time, right?

Oh, yeah, that’s that’s that’s when it started, yeah.

True. I mean, the guys don’t want to go from Hawaii.

Four and a half hour flight in a private jet is a lot nicer than a uh 10-hour flight.

No, no, I’m talking about like the West Coast, like you know, starting starting the season. The West Coast swing, yeah. On the West Coast swing instead of Hawaii, you know.

Four hours versus tack on another four to that, you know. So there’s no quick trip from Hawaii to Palm Springs. Right.

It makes me wonder if they’ll maybe consider a Vegas event.

That’s what I’m thinking. You know, they need to.

It’s it’s hitting those boys at Coyote Springs. That’s what they need to do. Yep.

Vegas weather is hitting myths in February. You know, I I tell people and mention this before when people ask whether they where they should play in February. And it’s like, you know, we’ve we’ve played in shorts and we’ve played in full park of gear. It it really depends on what’s going on.

On the bright side, hopefully, golf and white for now. That ain’t maybe that’s probably not happening. That’s not gonna happen.

Yeah, they gotta make up for that 150 million dollar economic boost that the tour brings every year, somehow.

Right? Yeah, it’s gonna be even more expensive.

Is that how much it is?

Yeah, every time those numbers are just like who like every time when F1 comes to Vegas or something, they’re like, It’s a billion dollars investment into the city. Like, yeah, it’s probably a lot, but why how are how are all of them the same? How are all of them the same?

City makes so much money when F1 is here, it’s stupid.

It’s not what I do, but you know, I think uh whoever’s forecasting all that stuff is probably incorrect. I’m just saying, you don’t think it’s accurate how much money comes to town when F1 is they’ll do they’ll do a country music festival and they’ll be like, it’s a billion dollar investment in the city. Everything’s everything’s the same number, so nobody’s actually doing numbers, they’re just throwing a number out there. And so somebody in Hawaii is saying it’s a hundred and fifty million dollar investment into the islands, bruh. And they probably don’t even know if that’s accurate, they’re probably just throwing a number out there to make people excited, or you know, I don’t think anybody knows the actual impact of anything.

I feel like forecasting is hard of all places, though, all that Hawaii is a place that will be impacted.

Absolutely, they’ll they’ll be impacted for sure. For sure.

So many mom and pop shops there, restaurants, hotels. I mean you just look at the field of it. Lando’s got it right there.

You just call everything billion dollars, and then hey, it’s a it’s impact billion dollar pocket, it impacts in a way, and the true impact of anything will never be fully felt because it’s a butterfly effect throughout the world, and who knows how it affects somebody down the road that can’t get to work, and then they get fired. Um the thing is when you’re on the ground, it look it looks totally different. Just like any course, when you watch it on TV, it just you’re like, where are they? But then from the ground, it’s just so different. And that course, yeah, the it’s so narrow, you can’t see that on TV. Like it’s crazy narrow, and you have to hit it so straight.

The tight boy for sure.

It’s tight, and if you barely miss the fairway, you’re in the sand or you’re in the pine straw. There’s no room. So some of those shot tracers I was watching, it’s like, I don’t think that was accurate because if he hit a 20-yard cut, that’s for sure in the trees, but he was in the middle of the fairway. So I don’t know. That course is crazy though. But I think they’ve done a lot, they’ve done some work since I was there. Yeah, David’s redone the greens, yeah. Um, I think I remember there wasn’t as much.

Did you remember? Like, do you remember your entire round?

Oh, yeah.

Jay, is is that course like when you see the scoring that they did on it, is that like doable, or is it like fuck these guys are really that good?

So I played the Tor Tees and I shot 78 or 79, but it’s not it’s not that hard. I mean, those guys can control their golf ball like no other.

So it’s off the T, right? Off the T. It’s off the T. Yeah, off the T.

The greens don’t slope that much. They’re not big greens. Um, I did notice one thing that looked different was there’s a lot more runoffs around the greens, like fairways, and they were missing missing greens and they would still put it. I didn’t feel like when I was there, there was much room to do that.

Gotcha.

So I think they kind of maybe elevated the greens a little bit in some areas and stuff, but I know they said that the sand that Fitzpatrick hit out on the final hole of the competition, not the playoff hole, but that wasn’t there last year. Yeah, that was that was all new.

Makes me want to go back there for sure and go play it. How’s the line of trip?

They were to try and hit stingers out of the trees all day.

Oh, yeah. The echo that when you hit a tee shot, though, like you know that echo when you’re hitting out of the woods, it’s crazy.

They talked a lot about how they were in the forest and now they come out to 18 and they’re just completely exposed. How dramatic is that?

It’s extremely dramatic. So 16, you kind of hit out of the trees, and it opens up when you hit to the green, and then 17 is exposed. You’re just hitting out towards the water, and then 18, it’s like you’re completely exposed, other than that wall of trees on the right with all the houses and stuff. Um, it’s it’s it’s pretty crazy because everything else, you’re just meandering through the trees and through neighborhoods and stuff, and then you’re just all of a sudden out on the bay.

Yeah, they were going way right. It’s such a that finishing hole is so cool, man.

Well, you got that par three, right? The par three, it’s like, hey, welcome to the bay. And then it’s like, hey, 18, you’re on the bay. Yep. Cool design. P dye original design, right? Yeah, original P Dye design.

Buy a 40-acre compound and just build our little houses and just play golf.

I go, and I just look at him, I go, Oh shit, I guess I’m reading your puss today, too. And then, like, from there, I think he he toned it down a little bit. He’s like, All right, all right, you’re gonna have to tip him after the round. Yeah, yeah. So it kind of calmed down a little bit after that, but it’s every once in a while from there, he was still asking, Hey, does this is this dog leg? Uh uh, is that what is that 260 carry, 270 carry? I mean, he meant well, but he was just one of those dudes who just he didn’t realize how actually annoying he was.

So it was what it was his first time playing there, though, I’m assuming, right? I I don’t know. I’d really they have they have GPS there. I who you telling Joe? I know I know, I know.

That’s a the beautiful thing though about it is that me and Matt, we were we were kind of we were kind of sitting on our throne of judgment because this guy totally was a Instagram ad golfer. Like everything in his bag was an Instagram ad.

Oh like I have a ghost. I have a ghost golf bag. Did he have the voodoo doll with the t’s in it? No, no, but he had that’s I mean he had a killer right there.

This was the modern day influenced golfer, not he had the masters themed ghost golf bag.

The funniest thing is the funniest thing is he even after Matt and I had talked about him being a walking Instagram golf ad, he said he had said something and he goes, Oh, I think I saw an ad for that on Instagram. Yeah, I lost my shit. Matt and I were we were a little bit I think we were putting, so I couldn’t quite like explode laughing. But as soon as we got to the cart, I told Matt, Oh, did you hear that? He’s like, I think I saw it on Instagram. Fuck yeah, you did. We know you saw it on an Instagram ad. It was like Master’s grip.

And he’s like, Is that a master’s grip? I think I saw that on Instagram, and oh, I was in tears.

Also, that’s fine, right? That’s fine. That’s it’s fine, right? Everybody gets yeah, absolutely. But it’s like you need to know how to conduct yourself on the golf course, yeah. Yeah, you know what I mean.

It was one of those things you had to be there to experience it to really get to really see what this guy said.

That is very funny, though. And for him, yeah, for him to be asking you reads because you like I said, he was he was a really nice guy, he very nice, yeah.

He met well, I know he met well, but uh I don’t think there was any intent to annoy at all.

After a while, I was just like, Come on, dude, just let me golf.

Yeah, I think Dan is the mayor of Paiute, so it kind of makes sense.

And and the more you learn, you understand that things different brands or things work better for you, and it’s not like don’t be targeted by somebody says, Oh, you’re this is gonna make you the best golfer in the world. But the the longer you play and the more you find out, the more you know how to attack the game, or you you know, you learn about aim point and you can read your own green, shit like that. You know what I mean?

It’s it’s we should we should put together like the levels of golf, you know, yeah, because everybody starts somewhere, you know, and then you you have a uh yeah an awakening as as you grow in the game, you know, to where something makes more sense to you than it didn’t when you first started, you know, and then absolutely uh good lord Joe, what’s going on back there?

The thing is, like it it never really changes like throughout your golfing lifetime. Like, like I was strictly a tidalist, that’s all I had. I didn’t have anything else, I had zero desire to even try anything else, and then I tried something else, and now I’m like, okay, I have like five different brands in my bag, and I think it’s the best way to do it. Just because every it’s not that tidalist is better than anyone or Tacomo’s the worst, or whatever, it’s just that they all fit differently in your bag and they work. No hate on Tacoma, no hate on Tacomo.

If you want to play Tacomo’s, go play Tacoma, no hate on them. They are a good affordable iron in a story, no hate on them whatsoever.

Yeah, I mean, if you want a decent iron that’s affordable and you don’t like what Bruce saying, don’t want to drop $1,500 on a new set. Totally understand.

Absolutely. Golf is way too fucking overpriced. It really is. It really is. Everything about it golf balls, accessories, the game of golf itself, golf bags, shoes, all the shit involved. Golf is way, way, way overpriced.

So if you can find something of quality that’s in your budget, do that. Don’t overspend for something that you might not even like. You know, it’s just don’t don’t buy a hype, don’t buy it, don’t buy something like impulsive. Go out, try the equipment, and if you like it, you might even be able to find it like like new or somewhat used or whatever, and get like a thousand dollars off. You know, there’s so many good deals out there, you just got to do a little bit of work.

Clubs nowadays, they’re so close in wallet. I mean, for the most part, I would say equipment now is the spread is a lot tighter as far as quality and performance and stuff like that than it used to be. Like, you if you want budget clubs before, you buy the set that has everything and they’re just not good. But everything nowadays, you can’t really go wrong, it’s just finding the right thing for your game. Exactly. Yeah, whatever it is.

You know, I highly suggest. I mean, we say this all the time, but like go listen. We’re not huge fans of lab, but we had Sam from Lab on the podcast. Go listen to that episode. If you’re thinking about getting a lab, the first stop you should do is listen to the Chasing Daylight podcast with Sam. Honestly, he’ll break it down and you’ll hear our gripes with it, and and and he’ll give his rebuttal. And we’re we’re fully open with whatever helps your game the best. We want people to play better golf. We want you to understand that you got to fill your divots, rake your bunkers, fix your ball marks. We’re golfers, that’s what we’re here for.

Find your game. We had we had a group in front of us on the the 12th hole at at Wolf, the par three with the lake, and we’re waiting for them to clear the green. I watched a guy climb into the bunker, swing, hit the ball, walked out of the bunker, and left.

And yeah, can you shouldn’t do that?

And so I I hit my ball in the bunker. I mean, I wasn’t thinking about that, but my ball ended up in the bunker, and I got down there and hit my shot and raked it, then raked his spot. It’s like, dude, you you had to step over a rake to get out of the bunker. It takes two fucking seconds. Jesus.

At minimum, walk backwards and swipe your foot. At minimum. At minimum. At minimum. Try and be a sandwalker, Dune style.

And if you’re not wearing a spike shoes, it kind of rake itself, you know. You can use your truth to rake.

It’s just don’t go in the bunker. You don’t have to rake shit if you don’t go in the bunker.

That too. You have to fix your ball mark.

So I uh I put the uh testing out the new SP Plus wedges, um, played them out at Mountain Falls, played them at Paiute. Uh some things I really like about them. Uh they’re not my lie angle. I play too flat with my wedges, so it was a little challenging on some of the the tight lies. And I play the T grind with my 58 degrees, so it’s I can really lay that thing open, and and I like that. So having a little bit more bounce and a different grind was weird getting used to, but did chip in on one hole, hit the flag on another hole. Um be able to control the spin really well. The they’re they’re a really good wedge. So if you’re somebody that’s looking for some additional spin with some flight control, check out the SP Plus line. It’s pretty good. Uh so there’s just it’s I think it’s just heavy. And uh even with making adjustments, trying to get the face shut, I still like to leave it open. So on short putts, um, and I don’t want to change my setup, you know, to to help manipulate the head. I want my putting stroke to be my putting stroke. So I uh just was trying to force the head closed a little bit on and on short putts, it just got me in trouble a little bit. So I love love lagging that thing though, man. Good lord, it’s so much fun to hit a lag putt with it.

Just take out another club and use two putters. Um I’m waiting for the day when you do that because it’s something that you would definitely do. You would do that. If there was anybody that would do that, it would be you.
